Description
The Upper House-wide Tryouts are tryouts for many teams in the Upper House on two consecutive weekends.
All tryouts must be open, which is to say that teams holding tryouts must include any players that show up and wish to tryout for the team.
Upper House provides fields space to each team for one hour. Upper House is not in any other way involved with the tryouts and it is up to the coaches of each individual team to determine the format of their tryouts and their selection process.
It is recommended that each team have a table set up by their field for check in purposes so that players walking on to the field can properly identify teams and join in the tryouts.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which Teams?
This will be Upper House wide and include a large number of Upper House teams (of which there are more than 33) in every age group/division.
In mid-late February we will post a chart on the Upper House website listing the team names and contact information of the individual teams holding tryouts, including the exact time for each team’s tryouts.
Tryouts for Players or for Coaches?
The UH-Wide Tryotus day is an opportunity for both players and coaches. Players may show up to try out for different teams. Coaches may show up with their teams to recruit new players. Coaches can sign up by emailing Jon Hale at jonbyweb@yahoo.com.
Is this Upper House or Club?
Upper House tryouts are contemporaneous with the Vikings Club tryouts and some people find the similar names confusing. Vikings Club is a club (i.e not the Vikings League) which creates Division 3 and Division 1 teams to play in Travel Leagues as well as within the Upper House. That is, the Club creates some Upper House teams which are a subset of Upper House (e.g. last fall there was one Club "SFVC" team in the five member Upper House’s Boys U11 division, and two Club "SFVC" teams in the six member Upper House’s Boys U12 division).
Vikings Club creates both Travel Teams and Upper House teams and it holds tryouts for both at the same time (see the Vikings Club page for details: http://www.sfvsc.org/). These are, of course, separate from other non-Club Upper House teams which hold their own tryouts.
This year Vikings Club tryouts will take place over the same weekend and at fields adjacent to the Upper House-wide tryouts. In addition to this physical proximity, Upper House tryouts are scheduled such that there is no direct time conflict with the Club tryouts. This should make it easy for players to try out for both Vikings Club teams and other individual Upper House teams.
Why So Early?
As with every league, fall 2010 teams must form in the spring. But unlike the recreational division, Upper House teams can hold tryouts and recruit players, and the tryouts for fall 2010 are happening this spring. To make these tryouts logistically easier for both teams and players, we are providing pitches at Crocker Amazon for individual Upper House teams so that interested players can come to one field on two designated days and tryout with individual Upper House teams. There will be many teams in each age division. Please note that many if not most teams will hold additional tryouts on their own and at their own scheduling.

Why Hold Tryouts for So Many Teams in One Place?
Upper House is providing free fields and the scheduling to make the whole tryout process easier for both Upper House players and teams. The idea is to lower the search costs for individual players and perhaps to lower the intimidation factor for some youngsters who might otherwise be reluctant to approach unknown teams and do tryouts piecemeal. Upper House will not, however, be responsible for or participate in any way with the checking-in of players that day, tryouts, selection, or anything else related to tryouts. The Vikings League and the Upper House run the Upper House program but have no involvement in putting together individual teams. Each individual team and its coaches will be responsible for organizing and running their own tryouts within the time frame that we provide for them.
Players
You will need to show up at Crocker Amazon for your age group's time slot. Note that you will likely only have time to tryout with one or two teams. Teams will be set up on pitches, with individual check-in tables and their team name displayed. Each team is allocated an hour for tryouts. It may help to do a little work in advance to decide what your top choices are before you get there. There is a list of all registered Upper House teams on the website, with contact information.
Coaches
If you are forming a new team to join Upper House, or bringing over the core of a team to which you wish to add some new players, please contact Jon Hale (jonbyweb@yahoo.com) for information about including your team in that day's scheduling. [Please note: this is for teams joining Upper House only, not for recreational teams. Recreational teams may not hold tryouts.]
